Salamander Flat

There are two different trailheads to get here.

Salamander Flat from Pine Hollow TH
 Hike Time (roundtrip): 1.5 to 2.5 hours
 Distance (roundtrip): 3.4 miles
 Elevation Gain: 830 feet
Main Aspect: All Directions
 Climb Rate: 488 feet per mile
 Average Grade: 9%
Notes: The trail climbs a bit until you get to the first meadow. THere is a trail junction there, take the right fork to the south. It will crest after a quarter miles, then drops a bit down to Salamander Flat.
Trailhead Elevation: 6750 ft
Trailhead Outhouse: Yes
Distance from Fee Station: 6.6 miles
Notes: Pine Hollow is where they close the Alpine Loop in the winter. The trail starts across the road to the east. Look west toward the mouth of AF Canyon to spot Devils Eye, a natural arch.
Destination Elevation: 7580 Feature: Meadow
Notes: Salamander Flat is a large meadow part way up the Alpine Loop. Many people use it as a primitive camping area, although it does have an outhouse.

Salamander Flat from Willow Hollow TH
 Hike Time (roundtrip): 0.5 to 1.0 hours
 Distance (roundtrip): 2 miles
 Elevation Gain: 480 feet
Main Aspect: NorthWest
 Climb Rate: 480 feet per mile
 Average Grade: 9%
Notes: This is one of the few downhill hikes on this site. It’s a short hike through groves of Aspen.
Trailhead Elevation: 8060 ft
Trailhead Outhouse: Yes
Distance from Fee Station: 10.8 miles
Notes: Follow the Alpine loop up to the highest point at 8060. Trails go in all directions from the parking lot.
