Wheeler Farm

up to 3 miles
easy
year round

Nestled in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, Wheeler Historic Farm offers hiking and biking trails through 75 acres of forest and natural landscape. In addition to the scenic trails, Wheeler Farm offers a fascinating glimpse into the workings of a real farm. There are plenty of animals to see including cows, goats, pigs, horses, ducks, and more. The trails through the farm are a mix of paved sidewalks and gravel paths, and are suitable for hikers of all abilities. Children will particularly enjoy romping around the grassy areas and seeing the animals up close.

Trailhead

Wheeler Farm is located at 6351 South 900 East in Salt Lake City (40.634582,-111.864253).

From I-215:

Exit I-215 on Exit 9 for Union Park Avenue.
Turn north onto Union Park Avenue.
Immediately turn left onto 6600 South.
Travel 0.2 miles and turn right onto 900 East.
Continue for 0.1 miles on 900 East before turning into Wheeler Farm on the right side of the road.
The Hike

From the parking area, begin walking past the large, grassy fields. During the warmer months of the year, these fields are the location of a weekly farmers market. On the northeast corner, the farm area begins. Two fenced ponds provide habitat for a variety of ducks and geese.

Continue north from the ponds to the working farm area of the park. Here you will find pens along each side of the trail with a variety of farm animals. It’s okay to pet them but be careful, they are not trained animals. After seeing the animals, walk east on a trail that crosses a creek. This back woods area of the farm has a network of great trails to choose from. There is even a complete 5k course mapped out through the park for runners.

Find your way through the forest, eventually crossing back over the creek near the south end of the farm and back to the grassy area near the parking lot. Total hiking distance is up to you but can easily be as much as 3 miles.
