Liberty Park (downtown SLC)

Often overlooked, Liberty Park is a gem in the Salt Lake Valley, offering visitors miles of walking paths, a pond, an aviary, water features, and much more. Liberty Park is the perfect destination for those without a lot of extra time to get out for a walk or ride without having to go far from home.

Trailhead

Liberty Park is located in Salt Lake City, UT between 500 East and 700 East and 900 South and 1300 South. Vehicle access to the park is located on the north and south ends of the park on 900 South and 1300 South.

From I-80 in Salt Lake

Take Exit 125 for 700 East.
Turn north onto 700 East and continue 1.6 miles.
Turn west onto 1300 South.
Drive one block then turn north into Liberty Park. You may also access the park on the north side on 900 South.
There is plenty of parking available along the one-way road that circles the outer perimeter of the park. Use caution as there is heavy pedestrian traffic.

The Hike

The options for a walk at Liberty Park are virtually unlimited. A large sidewalk and running path circles the outer perimeter of the park, which is very popular with runners, bicyclists, and skaters. This track is 1.5 miles long, making it a great choice for those that like to set distance or speed goals.

Various other paths lead into the park from the outer loop. Liberty Park Pond is located at the southeast corner of the park adjacent to Tracy Aviary, a must-see attraction for bird lovers. To the north of the pond, there is a large hill for those looking to increase their heart rate with some laps up and down or who want a higher vantage point. Sunny days will find the park full with people and dogs enjoying various activities.

Just north of Tracy Aviary, along the prominent path down the middle of the park, look for the Seven Canyons Fountain. This interesting water feature has seven ‘canyons’, one for each canyon in the Salt Lake Valley, each made of large rocks, complete with flowing water. The Seven Canyons Fountain is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day each year.

North of the Seven Canyons Fountain, you’ll encounter plenty of open space and other attractions, such as a historical home, playgrounds, picnic facilities, and more.

Those interested in team sports will find a variety of local leagues active in this park. Kickball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and runners groups of all skill levels use this space.
